Avoid all fabrics that can shed. Curling shoes or clean rubber soled footwear are essential. Temperature in the ice shed is 70 Celcius, dress accordingly.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the clubhouse or the ice shed.

Curling and Club Etiquette

In the interest of promoting practices that will provide the greatest pleasure and satisfaction for all participants, attention is drawn to the following points:

Before the match:

  • Curling is a team sport. As a team member, it is your
responsibility to know when you are scheduled to play. If you
cannot be present, you should speak to your skip and help him or
her to find a replacement who qualifies under the rules of the
    competition.

On the ice:

  • Players of either side should take care not to move about or cross
the ice when another player is preparing to deliver or is
    delivering his stone.
  • Players of the opposing side must not move towards the middle
of the rink to follow the path of a running stone as this may
obscure the view of both the player delivering the stone and his
    skip.
  • Skips, seconds and leads shall remain outside the hog line while
the score in any end is being determined.
  • Only the skip, or a person appointed by him, has the right to
    sweep behind the tee line.
  • Unless sweeping a running stone, no player, other than the skip
or third, has the right to enter the house while an end is in
    progress.
  • In the interest of clean ice, players should clean their footwear
with the electric cleaner before stepping onto the ice, and they
should not walk on the sideboards

Founded in 1807, The Royal Montreal Curling Club is the oldest active athletic club in North America.

It was during the reign of King George III, when Montreal was a town of perhaps 12,000, that 20 merchants and a chaplain who liked to curl together on the ice of the St. Lawrence River decided to form a curling club. The group met on January 22, 1807, in Gillis Tavern, where The Montreal Curling Club was born, the oldest established sports club still active in North America.

In 1860 The Montreal Curling Club moved to an indoor rink on Drummond Street, on the current site of Le Mount Stephen Hotel. Twenty-eight years later, a lot on St. Catherine Street between St. Mathieu and St. Marc was purchased for construction of a new curling shed. Opened in 1889, it has remained our rink ever since. The following year we sold the portion of the land fronting on St. Catherine Street and acquired a lot on the other side of the shed, then 56 St. Luke Street (now 1850 Boulevard de Maisonneuve West), to build a club house. Designed by Hyde & Nobbs, it was opened on Christmas Eve 1892, and expanded to its present size in 1912.
The curling shed was built in the style of the famous Victoria Arena (where the Montreal Maroons later played hockey), on a frame of laminated wood in arched girders, permitting a large, free space unencumbered by pillars. It is the only known example of this type of structure still in existence.

Although women were occasionally invited to curl with the men in the mid-to-late 1800s, The Montreal Curling Club did not include any female members. In 1894, a group of women headed by Mrs. E.A. Whitehead founded the first all-women’s curling club in the world, the Ladies Montreal Curling Club. The LMCC rented ice from the Montreal Curling Club, and soon after held competitions with newly developed women’s curling clubs in Quebec and the United States. Mrs. Whitehead went on to become the first President of the Ladies Curling Association which, to this day, organizes competitions for curling clubs from across Quebec and Ontario.

On February 23, 1924, a Royal Warrant was issued granting the Montreal Curling Club the right to add the word “Royal” to its name. Henceforth it would be known as The Royal Montreal Curling Club (RMCC). It is around this time that the Ladies Montreal Curling Club became known as the “Ladies Branch of the Royal Montreal Curling Club”. In 1997, women were invited to become members of the RMCC, and the Ladies Branch was folded into the administrative structure of the “main branch” of the RMCC in 2015.

Over the last 30 years, many curling clubs in Montreal and Westmount have closed their doors: Heather in 1975, followed in 1982 by Montreal Caledonia and Greystone, then St George, and in 2001, Thistle. We remain the only curling club close to the downtown area still in operation, a heritage monument and, as Guy Hemmings put it, truly a shrine to curling in Canada.

It contains a fascinating history and numerous photographs that capture the spirit of the club, key events, and changes over the years. It is available for purchase. We’ve received some additional information from the K4K organizers and wanted to share:

1. The raffle will take place - but it will be postponed until such time that it is safe to do so.

2. Raffle tickets - they ask that we DO NOT attempt to collect or hand off raffle tickets, money etc.  It’s important that we respect social distancing, and that includes avoiding any unnecessary connections to pick up raffle books or drop them at the club.  Please hold onto your tickets, ticket stubs and money until we have further instructions from K4K.

3. A reminder to everyone who had registered to participate in the March 28 event - you have the option to
a) convert your $50 registration fee to a donation (with tax receipt); or
b) convert your $50 fee to purchase 10 raffle tickets; or
c) request a refund.
Please advise K4K of your choice by sending them a quick email:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  They are still working out the logistics of how they will handle each choice and will send us more information soon.

4. If you ordered a K4K tshirt they have been delivered to the K4K team, but they will not be distributed until such time that it is safe to do so.
